28th January 2009 - A Legendary Evening

THE MATCH OF LEGENDS - A PERSONAL VIEW

Wednesday’s proceedings at the Legends match on the Wellesley were awesome . The earlier rain dried up (unlike on the previous visit from a City side in 2004!) and an amazing crowd, of somewhere around 2500, assembled for what turned out to be a hugely successful and entertaining evening.  From the Under 9s match which preceeded the main event to the eight goals from the Legends themselves (including two from the star of the evening Darren Huckerby); from the music which greeted every goal to the cheering and chanting of Yarmouth’s name by the youngsters (and not just the Barmy Army), it was a good-humoured occasion and well-organised event which would bear repeating!

I cannot give a full report of the game itself as I was not on this occasion taking notes being employed elsewhere, but the 4-4 scoreline could not have suited better had it been contrived, though I would not dare suggest such a thing! While I guess most people turned out to cheer their Canary heroes once more, it was Bill Punton’s Yarmouth Legends who had the honour of scoring the opening goal, and then leading again at 3-2 in the second half. And from my point of view it was just great to once more shake the hands of some of the Bloaters’ greats like Neil Hart, Nolan Keeley and Mark Vincent.

Dale Gordon did a fantastic job , first of all coming up with the idea and then organising the whole thing, and along with his committee is to be hugely thanked. But there are also a number of unsung heroes who deserve thanks and praise, and principal among these is our Anne who spent many hours working in support of the project; then there were our regular people from the committee plus some supporters and players who helped out in various ways, and the good folk from the Council who stewarded etc.  Overall, it’s too long a list to detail, and I hesitate to do so in case I miss someone out, though Dale made an attempt in his programme notes! To realise all these people came together for the good of GYTFC (and to have some fun too) is a great feeling.
