Bloaters return to action with win

Saturday 14th February 2009

BLOATERS 4, MARCH TOWN UNITED 1

Olly Savage made his return to the side after several weeks absence due to work but the major change saw Jake Reed back in the starting line-up for the first time in nine games; the youngster’s last start was against Acle in the Norfolk Senior Cup on November 22nd. The player who replaced him, David Hinton, is no longer available to the club whilst it is rumoured Gavin Norman has returned to Swaffham after just one game for the Bloaters.

Bloaters – 1 Michael Hilton, 2 Johnny Watt, 3 Olly Savage, 4 Gareth Palmer, 5 Adey Ager (c), 6 Alan Darby, 7 Dominic Smith, 8 Adam Sewell, 9 Stewart Roach, 10 Jake Reed, 11 Scott Woodcock. Subs: 12 Toby Gorbould, 14 Chris Squire, 15 Mark Thompson, 17 Elliot Pride.

March – 1 Chris Anker, 2 Scott Boguzs, 3 Craig Norman, 4 Harry Roe, 5 Alex Spibey, 6 Michael Anker, 7 Sam Murphy, 8 Lee White, 9 Ashley Brand, 10 Luke Pepper (c), 11 Andy Wayte. Subs: 12 Joe Barnes, 14 Curt Westley, 15 James Richardson.

Referee – Neil Jacques (Gorleston)

Yarmouth opened the scoring in the twelfth minute. Reed’s astute pass set Woodcock free on the right and his pinpoint cross was headed home superbly by Sewell.

March equalised in the 22nd minute after the Yarmouth defence had hesitated when an anticipated free kick did not come and Pepper stepped in to knock the ball between Hilton and his right hand post from two yards.

Yarmouth regained the lead after 30 minutes: Smith sent the ball out to Woodcock, this time on the left, and the lanky striker strode into the box and beat Anker at the near post.

Five minutes after the break the Bloaters increased their lead to 3-1: Reed, having a magnificent game, crossed low into the box and Roach sublimely back-heeled the ball  beyond Anker into the far corner.

The score became 4-1 after 67 minutes from the penalty spot. Savage found Reed haring down the right and when Reed crossed into the box Roach was fouled as he went up for the ball. Woodcock obliged from the spot for his second of the game.

Attendance – 53

This was a timely result as the news that Paul Tong had resigned as joint-manager during the week must have come as a shock to the players as much as to everyone else. Tong quit over a disagreement about the selection of players for the Reserve game against Poringland last Saturday, a game at which Tong was not present due to a prior engagement.

Kevin Cruickshank has resumed lone control of the side with assistance from Stewart Roach.
