Wanderers Doubled

Saturday 12th September 2009

Bloaters 2, Ipswich Wanderers 0

Stewart Roach followed up last week’s hat-trick with a real striker’s brace in Great Yarmouth’s 2-0 win over Ipswich Wanderers, writes Arthur Fisk. The Bloaters’ leading poacher used all his experience to bulldoze his way through the Wanderers’ defence to guide the ball home on 44 minutes.

Just a minute later, Roach was on hand again to score one of his trademark goals that Ridgeons League defences have come to fear. From three yards out and with his back to goal, Roach let fly with an acrobatic overhead kick that beat keeper Hammond with ease.

Disappointingly, only 63 spectators saw the Bloaters complete the league’s first double of the season in this rearranged fixture.

Yarmouth manager Paul Tong put together a really talented squad and relied on the same team which beat Team Bury in midweek. Toby Gorbould, so often on the bench this season, gave his all, as did the under-rated Oliver Savage, while Craig Roberts has filled his role with distinction.

Manager Tong had the luxury of three good subs with Fernando Vide the first off the bench to cause mayhem in the visitors’ defence. Having recovered from illness, Jake Reed also came off the bench to have a good spell, and Dominic Smith proved a real class act.

It is still early days but the signs are most encouraging for the Bloaters.
