Dersingham beaten again in Senior Cup

Saturday 10th October 2009

Dersingham Rovers 1, Great Yarmouth Town 4

In borrowed blue and old gold kit because of a colour clash, the Bloaters showed their blue side for the first half hour of this Norfolk Senior Cup third round clash in North-West Norfolk but then returned to the gold standard for the final hour.

“Cup games are all about winning,” commented Yarmouth manager Paul Tong, “and although we didn’t start very well, in the second half we played some good football. We started very sloppily and, I believe, took them too lightly. They seized the initiative and we didn’t have a shot until 36 minutes into the game.

“I was preparing to make changes at half time but Fernando (Vide) showed his skill and pace to get us the penalty, and then he outran their defence and laid it on for the second goal; he’s been a revelation since coming into the squad.

“Instead of changing it, I decided to stick with them and we bossed the second half when our fitness told.”

Dersingham, looking determined to improve on last year’s performance at the same stage of the Cup when they lost 3-0 to the Bloaters, went ahead after only ten minutes. A mistake by Martyn Magee let in Danny Jezeph who beat the advancing Michael Hilton. The home side, without a win this season, roared into a sluggish Yarmouth but despite conceding free kicks, the Bloaters held firm with Hilton needing to make only one big save.

Yarmouth began to get their game together, and the turning point of the match came with 40 minutes gone. Fernando Vide showed a clean pair of heels to the home defence and strode into the penalty area only to be felled by the outstretched leg of Adam Daniels as the Dersingham ‘keeper desperately attempted to claim the ball. Daniels was booked and Magee put away the spot kick via the left-hand post to atone for his earlier slip.

Two minutes later, Vide again advanced towards the home box with defenders backing off this time wary of the danger. The cross was met by Stewart Roach who nonchalantly stroked the ball home for a 2-1 interval lead, leaving the home side to argue amongst themselves.

Yarmouth dominated the second half and stretched the lead in the 52nd minute through Jake Reed who took a Magee pass in his stride and thus ended his personal goal drought. Reed could have had more but Daniels intecepted at the last moment on 56 minutes, and twenty minutes from the end the youngster saw his header from a Roach nod-on drop onto the bar but go over.

Vide continued his terrorising of the Dersingham defence but despite several good attempts still remains goal-less for the first team this season. Mark Thompson made it 4-1 after 78 minutes with his second goal of the week when that man Reed provided the perfect flick-on in the box. Further goals looked likely, but Vide and Dominic Smith both missed chances late on.
