Halstead Town

Bloaters unbeaten run comes to abrupt end

Saturday 13th February 2010

Halstead Town 4 Great Yarmouth Town 1

Great Yarmouth Town suffered their first league defeat in 21 games as they went down 4-1 to Halstead Town in Essex on Saturday.

Games between these two sides this season have certainly been something a little special, with Halstead being on the end of a 6-0 thrashing back in October and only last month Halstead inflicted Yarmouth's only home defeat of the season in the First Division Knock-Out Cup, so both sides had already suffered their worst defeat of the season at the hands of one another.

The match got off to the worst possible start for Yarmouth as they were a man, and a goal down within 3 minutes. Sloppy Yarmouth defending left goalkeeper Michael Hilton exposed and a gaping goal for Ray Turner who fired straight at Jonny King who handled the ball on the line resulting in a red card for the right back and a penalty to Halstead which Lee Townrow duly converted. The rest of the first half was evenly matched, despite Yarmouth's numerical disadvantage with Roberts and Magee both coming close with efforts from set pieces, Roberts causing chaos in the home sides defence from corners and Magee almost scoring from a quickly taken 40 year free kick which Ed Wooten did well to tip over. Michael Hilton in the Yarmouth goal also had to be on top form to deny the home side.

Hilton continued producing fine saves in the second half , tipping over another effort in the 48th minute and again saving well in the 73rd minute from Terry Raynor, only to see the resulting corner be scored through Ray Turner. Three minutes later the score was threatening to be a heavy defeat as Chris Beyan managed to add a third.

Martyn Magee powered in a 30 yard free kick after 82 minutes giving Yarmouth a glimmer of hope which was quickly dashed as Andy Joslin's speculative low drive deflected to make it four to Halstead. Manager Paul Tong was full of praise for his players despite the defeat, “It brings to an end our amazing run but I can't fault the lads at all for what we've achieved this season, some of them under performed today but for 72 minutes we held them to 1-0 with ten men. You have to go back to August for our last league defeat and hopefully we can carry on and start another great run”.

The Bloater's next match comes this Saturday as they visit the only team they have yet to face this season in the league; Cornard United. Paul Tong is without the suspended Steve Best and long-term absentee Adrian Ager, whilst Adam Sewell continues to be sidelined with an injury.

Great Yarmouth Res 3 Debenham LC Res 4

Yarmouth reserves missed the chance to move up to second in the table as Debenham left the Wellesley with all three points. The home side were forced to make late changes as due to a number of circumstances three players had to be drafted in as players became unavailable late on. It meant that Yarmouth fielded an untested back line with Jamie Miller and Adam Blanch playing in unfamiliar positions at centre back and right back respectively.

Debenham went ahead before Lee Roscoe equalised but Yarmouth went into the break 2-1 down. The second half began poorly and Debenham were 4-1 up before the home side suddenly kicked into life and started showing signs of the team that had already beaten their opponents twice this season. Lee Roscoe scored a second after good link up between Jack Deeley and Adam Blanch. Yarmouth continued to press with the final ten minutes being totally dominated by the Bloaters but some heroic goalkeeping kept Debenham ahead to take all three points. Next for Yarmouth is Needham Market at the Wellesley on Saturday.

Yarmouth team: J Sharpe, A Blanch, J Miller, D Barnes, E Short, V Formoso, G Brooks, C Owen, M Thompson, L Roscoe, J. Deeley No subs used.

Bungay Town Youth 1, Great Yarmouth Youth 3

The Bloaters were surprisingly in action last Thursday night on a bitterly cold night and a very icy pitch. Bungay carried out a midday pitch inspection and a further one followed at 3:30 when the game was passed fit to play. At kick off, and with temperatures of -2, the pitch was very hard and it didn't get any better, however the officials deemed the pitch fit for play so both teams had to adapt to the tricky conditions.

The Bloaters had the majority of the possession in the early stages but it was the hosts who took the lead after 15 minutes. A hopeful long ball managed to cause the Yarmouth defence problems and was picked up by the Bungay striker who proceeded to round ‘keeper Jake Sharpe before firing into an open net. After that it was all Yarmouth and the goal seemed to inject some urgency into the Bloaters play. Constant chances came and went as the ‘keeper and missed opportunities prevented Yarmouth from getting on level terms. But on 41 minutes Lee Roscoe calmly slotted in from a good Adam Blanch cross.

The second half was one way traffic again as Yarmouth went even more attacking, taking off a defender and bringing on Jack Deeley in an attempt to zip the attack. The change worked dividends as after 65 minutes Deeley played a lovely through ball for Josh Trett to blast a left footer into the top of the net. Deeley got the Bloaters third goal after 76 minutes leaving the keeper with no chance. The goal was just what Deeley wanted and this capped off his fine second half performance.

The game finished 3-1 and was a very good performance in the conditions. The Bloaters have a youthful look about their squad this season and with the likes of George Barndon, Danny Burgess, Liam Baker and Jake Jessop making the squad for this match, and three playing their part in it, the under 18's look to have some good prospects indeed.

Squad: J.Sharpe, D.Harvey, E.Short, R.Catchpole, A. Geleta, G.Barndon, G.Brooks, L.Roscoe, A.Blanch, J.Trett, K.Bartley
Subs: L.Baker, J.Jessop, J.Deeley (45 for A.Geleta) & D.Burgess (Unused)
